A Week of Small Adventures and Big News: The Tate Modern, V&A Museum... And University!

Just got back from another week in the big smoke- this time for trip with college. I ended up staying for a wee bit longer though, as the return journey meant we'd be back in at Sheffield station around 11 so I wouldn't be able to get home. Well, that's my excuse anyway!
This time around, the college itinerary meant we had to do the museum circuit - starting with the Tate Modern. I know this is going to sound awful and yes, I'm an art student, blah blah blah, but I really was not looking forward to it. Some years ago, I visited the Tate in St. Ives, Cornwall -- and was hugely disappointed. I don't know if it's because of my upbringing, or a lack of 'taste', or the fact that my pursuits are focused on illustration.. but I just found the whole thing bloody ridiculous. It all seemed rather pretentious to stand around talking about the deep, resonating emotion of a wall painted red: I didn't (and still don't) get it.
I'm not going to lie: there were wall-painted-red moments at the Tate Modern, and I did laugh awkwardly at some points. However, all things considered... I did quite enjoy it! Wandering around and taking photos make the whole experience a lot more interactive, in a way. I don't think I'd have liked it quite as much if I didn't have my camera with me!

Got quite an audience for this!

Might have bought a book..  It's absolutely fascinating and I couldn't resist! I fully maintain that it wanted to come home with me. Also, silly bathroom selfies with the boyfriend were completely necessary.

Next up on my mini-adventure: the V&A Museum. I've been in before (after visiting the British Museum a while back) though not explored to any great extent. Honestly, the first time around I didn't get much further than the gift shop (which is fiendishly expensive and both intimidated me and made me roll my eyes in despair at the poor sods willing to pay out of their arses for things they could probably find at a more reasonable price elsewhere). This experience was much more productive, I feel, as although we didn't manage to get around the whole museum, we managed a fair chunk! Kind of gutted it closed before Nick and I could sample the tea and scones in the café though - another time maybe!

Aaaand after all that museuming (spellchecker hasn't bothered correcting that so I'm going to take it and roll with it actually being a verb) was done, we headed home (or, well, Leytonstone) - and I turned into a vegetable for a solid two days thanks to the flu I picked up somewhere along the line. Was feeling fairly sorry for myself, I'll admit! I don't think I've ever had more lemsips than I did in those few days. By the time thursday rolled around, I was about ready to full-on snort Olbas Oil in a desperate measure to clear my sinuses - and so was definitely not ready for the UCAS email when it buzzed onto my phone.
Now, you first have to understand that the previous university I applied to rejected me despite telling me to my face that my work was strong and the interview was extremely positive (we think due to the mention of my history of agoraphobia). I'm not naming names (because it's over and done with - and an experience I'd like to put behind me) though it's safe to say it really did knock my confidence. Knowing how competitive the illustration courses are at UAL, when I saw the notification that something had been changed on my UCAS, I was fully prepared for another blow.

BOOM!

So.. yep: I do believe that as of next year I'll be an illustration student at Camberwell, of which I've talked about here. It was the place I did originally want to go, though never expected to get into. I'm ecstatic!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Just got back from another lovely (but cold) weekend in London! Was a bit of a mess getting down there on Friday night as I managed to miss my coach (finished late at college and my train home was delayed - grr!) and had to rebook for later one in the evening which then managed to be just over an hour late getting into Sheffield, leaving me sat sniffling - I have a pretty nasty cold at the moment - in the waiting room at Meadowhell interchange all on my onesie. I did eventually get there, though!

Not going to lie - part of the reason I wanted to go to London this weekend (it might not have been totally just to see Nick - sorry!) was to have a look at the christmas decor.. Aside from the sheer madness of Oxford Street, it was pretty stunning!

Selfidges - it was never going to be anything but extravagant, was it?
Giant perfume bottle.. Guess the price tag of that bugger!

Going up the escalators.. Was genuinely so excited at this point - I must have looked a right idiot gawping at everything!

Santa, taking refuge from the extreme price tags in a conveniently placed phone box.

I wanted to take all these cuties home.. Nick bonded with the little wolf as well - not quite as bah humbug after all, aha!

Pretty decorations that I wish I could afford...

...But definitely can't!

Words can't accurately explain how much fun I had with this stuff.. Thinking of getting some to put along Nick's windowsill so that inside of pools of water from the condensation we'll have pretty snow instead! Perhaps not the wisest of ideas, but a fun one at the very least...

Had a minor fangirl moment over the Illamasqua counter!

Cute Christmas sweet treats! It was around this point that I hatched my plan to hide in the toilets and just live in Selfidges forever and ever - unfortunately, Nick didn't reckon much to it.

Light snacks....?!

Some more Oxford Street decor - this time House of Fraser and John Lewis to the right (just out of shot). They were honestly like a pair of competitive neighbours with their christmas lights!

One of my favourite window displays - Accessorize. I adored those little reindeer. So cute!

Boots' decorations were also amazing - and very, very big!

On the way home from the tube we passed this pretty suspect building.. with the cutest sign outside! Think the building itself is full of squatters - but, hey, at least they're complimentary!

I like you too, chair.

Open day!

Forgot to mention in my last post that I went to my first uni open day on saturday while I was in London - UAL! I was reeeeallly excited about visiting - since the illustration course at Camberwell college is pretty heavily hyped up. After the open day and the illustration talk - well, I can definitely see why! Loooooved it so much!

My bag of goodies...

A cute little badge that Nick was determined to grafitti with an 'f' at the beginning... Pinned it on my new knit jumper from H&M

Loooots of reading to do!

Back from London

Sooo.. I'm back in Sheffield after an amazing week (or just over, rather, since I went on Thursday rather than Saturday) in London! I know it's said all too often about trips away from home - and probably sounds totally cheesy - but I really did feel pretty down about having to come home. It sounds awful, saying it like that, and I don't mean it to be that negative - I am happy to be home with my family and my pigdogs - but I really am going to miss being there. There was so much to do and see - even though the crowds irritated me and the contrast between the people up north and in London was a bit of a shock. Not going to lie - I really missed Yorkshire accents! I can't imagine it being long until I'm back though - I miss Nick already and I've not been away from him more than 7 hours... What a sap!

Anyway, I better recap a little. I managed to coerce Nick successfully into doing some super touristy stuff while I was there - which I think he found a little frustrating at time but he was very good at putting up with me while I ran around taking [far too many] pictures!

At the British Museum - was loving the architecture and sculpture - will fit in nicely with my research for contextual studies at college!

If I had the money, I would've bought out the entire gift shop - including the premature Christmas tree. Check out the front cover of the custom bound copy of the Hobbit in bottom right corner - so gorgeous!

These photos are a really large shopping list for the future, when: a] I'm insanely rich, b] I have a very large house, c] can get away with running off with museum exhibits without being arrested, d] all of the previous options

Also managed to visit Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace. Don't get me wrong - the palace is an impressive building - but I much preferred the architectural style of the British Museum. Not terribly fond of blocky buildings - sorry Queeny! I did rather like your gate posts though!

Another tourist-trap, I guess, but definitely one of my favourite places that Nick and I visited - Chinatown! It was getting dark by the time we got there, and with all the lights on it was practically fantastical. The lanterns hanging between the buildings were stunning! The only issue I had at the time was the fact that we were absolutely starving as we walked through - with the sheer amount of restaurants flaunting food at us from both sides, it was a tortuous journey!

Then, of course, there was Halloween, which I was both excited and apprehensive about - mainly due to the fact that my costume went to my home address rather than Nick's house, and so had to be sent back down to London (I was so worried it wouldn't arrive in time!) but also partly because I've never been away from home properly during Halloween. And also a little bit because I didn't get to dress my dogs up, but I probably shouldn't admit to that!

Our pumpkins! Mine was the grumpy cat one, and a for a first attempt at carving a pumpkin on all on my tod, I'm pretty pleased!

And our costumes - zombie prom queen and scary jester. :-) So proud of my makeup - on both me and Nick - that rigid collodion FX makeup was so fun to play with! I also need to take a moment to say how awesome that rose crown is - I bought it from Paradise Shore on etsy and they shipped it to me super quick. It's stunning!

Yay!

Last but not least.. we went to the Blackheath fireworks display. Got there early (with a few beers in hand...) to make sure we got a good view (the crowds got pretty crazy!) and very nearly froze to death during the wait. It was so worth it though!
